Copilot model access becomes something teams can manage in code
A new generally available API lets administrators read and update model policies across their organisation.
Tools: GitHub Copilot
What happened
GitHub made its Copilot model-policy REST API generally available on October 19. Administrators can retrieve and update policies through GET and PATCH endpoints for enterprises, enterprise teams, agent apps, and organisations.
The API covers model availability and the delegation of model control. Enterprise policies can delegate to organisations, or to teams and apps under the relevant enterprise mode. This is an administration release; it does not announce a new model or remove existing access rules.
What this means for you · Roseram analysis
Our reading: model choice is becoming part of a team’s operating setup. A policy stored and reviewed alongside other configuration could make changes easier to explain than a series of manual edits. That is an opportunity for better record-keeping, rather than automatic proof of good governance.
Begin by reading the current policy and saving a record of it. Propose one change for a small group, confirm who can approve it, and check the result before widening access. A useful internal screen should explain why a model is unavailable instead of presenting a switch that appears broken.
