Copilot moves beyond code into desktop applications

A public preview lets Copilot CLI and the Copilot app operate desktop software on Windows and macOS.

Tools: GitHub Copilot

What happened

GitHub released computer use in public preview on October 1 for Copilot CLI and the Copilot app on Windows and macOS. It can inspect application content, operate controls, enter text, and navigate workflows. GitHub says users approve app control, can review persistent permissions, and remain subject to organization settings.

Why it matters

Desktop interaction extends automation to software without a useful API. It also makes permissions and visible review part of the workflow: a successful click is not necessarily a correctly completed business task. Preview status is a reason to test representative work before relying on it.
