PRODUCT DESIGN / PUBLIC DOCUMENTATION
What this case establishes
This is a product-design case based on public project documentation. Repository visibility is not proof of secure deployment, maintained compatibility, adoption or revenue. Roseram did not install or benchmark this project; the proposed evaluation is not a reported result.

Docling: the documented workflow
Docling’s repository documents parsing and converting document formats, including layout and table handling with structured exports. The documented local-processing options do not remove the need to inspect model downloads, dependencies and the selected configuration. Roseram did not benchmark parsing accuracy or certify a deployment.
The mechanism worth examining
A PDF’s visible order may differ from the order extracted as text. A table can lose the relationship between a value and its header, while footnotes can become detached from the claim they qualify. These errors travel into retrieval and generation. Preserving structure and source anchors lets a downstream system inspect the original context instead of relying on a flattened paragraph.
The implementation decision
Create a small permitted document set containing multi-column pages, tables and footnotes. Define the structural features that the application needs. Keep page references and inspect the export format before designing chunking. Use synthetic or public material for the first test and confirm how the chosen setup obtains any required models.
Where the workflow can fail
A converted table can merge columns or reverse a reading sequence. A scanned page may produce plausible but incorrect characters. The downstream model can then answer confidently from an extraction mistake. Keep the original page accessible and flag parsing uncertainty rather than silently treating every extracted token as accurate.
A practical evaluation, designed for this use case
Compare structured output with a human-reviewed reference for the selected pages. Test whether important header/value relationships and footnote links survive. Then run a few answer questions that depend on those features. Count parsing failures separately from retrieval and generation failures so the team can correct the actual cause.

The decision matrix
Original evaluation criteria for this workflow. These are questions to test, not results measured by Roseram.
| Decision | Evidence to collect | Stop or revise when |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Reading order and table relations checked | Flattening changes the meaning |
| Anchors | Original page locations preserved | An answer cannot be checked against the source |
| Evaluation | Parsing and answering tested separately | A model mistake hides an extraction defect |

Questions this case answers
Does clean extracted text guarantee correct parsing?
No. Structure, reading order and value relationships can still be wrong.
Why retain original page references?
They let reviewers verify an answer and locate the extraction error.

Wiki brief
Docling is examined here for document conversion for downstream ai. The article answers “How should teams evaluate document parsing before building a RAG system?” using linked primary material and original evaluation design. It is not a customer testimonial for Roseram or an endorsement by Docling.
Operator takeaways
- Check relationships, not just text.
- Retain page anchors.
- Separate parsing from answering.
