PRODUCT DESIGN / PUBLIC DOCUMENTATION
What this case establishes
This is a product-design case based on public project documentation. Repository visibility is not proof of secure deployment, maintained compatibility, adoption or revenue. Roseram did not install or benchmark this project; the proposed evaluation is not a reported result.

Ollama: the documented workflow
Ollama’s public repository documents running and serving language models and also describes cloud-related capabilities. This is a product-design case, not a measured customer success story. Installing a local runtime does not establish that every feature or model request stays offline, and model licensing and hardware requirements remain separate questions.
The mechanism worth examining
A local serving layer gives an application a consistent interface to a model running on controlled hardware. That can simplify experiments with inference placement, but latency and quality depend on the chosen weights, context size and available resources. The application still needs an explicit route for each request. A local process and a hosted model endpoint can coexist in the same product.
The implementation decision
Choose one permitted synthetic task and identify its model, runtime route and hardware. Inspect which features download files or call an external endpoint. Keep the server bound to the intended interface and decide how clients authenticate. Compare a local path with a hosted alternative on the same acceptance criteria before treating either option as cheaper or better.
Where the workflow can fail
A developer may accidentally expose the serving port, run out of memory with longer context or select a model that cannot satisfy the task. A configuration change can also route requests away from the expected machine. Record the runtime version and model identity; do not rely on a UI label alone. Handle resource failure explicitly instead of leaving the user with an endless loading state.
A practical evaluation, designed for this use case
Measure time to first response, accepted task completion, peak memory and failure recovery with a bounded request set. Repeat with the longest supported input and concurrent requests. Inspect network behavior in the actual configuration. Include hardware and maintenance effort in a cost comparison; a zero provider invoice is not zero operating cost.

The decision matrix
Original evaluation criteria for this workflow. These are questions to test, not results measured by Roseram.
| Decision | Evidence to collect | Stop or revise when |
|---|---|---|
| Placement | Actual request route inspected | A local label hides a hosted request |
| Capacity | Long inputs and concurrency tested | A small demo masks memory failure |
| Economics | Hardware and operation counted | No API invoice is called free inference |

Questions this case answers
Does Ollama mean every feature is offline?
No. Inspect the configuration and documented local/cloud boundaries.
Is a local model automatically cheaper?
No. Compare accepted output, hardware, utilization and maintenance.
