PRODUCT DESIGN / PUBLIC DOCUMENTATION
What this case establishes
This is a product-design case based on public project documentation. Repository visibility is not proof of secure deployment, maintained compatibility, adoption or revenue. Roseram did not install or benchmark this project; the proposed evaluation is not a reported result.

Haystack: the documented workflow
Haystack’s repository documents components and pipelines for retrieval-augmented generation and related AI workflows. This is a product-design case without a reported customer ROI claim. The chosen retriever, documents, model and routing determine the result; the framework name alone does not establish answer quality.
The mechanism worth examining
A component boundary helps inspect what was retrieved before an answer is generated. That matters because a wrong answer can arise from missing evidence, an incorrect passage or a model ignoring a correct passage. Keeping those stages visible lets the developer fix the responsible component rather than repeatedly rewriting the prompt without knowing the cause.
The implementation decision
Use a small permitted document set with independently prepared questions and answers. Define which questions should be answerable and which should receive an explicit limit. Keep document identifiers and passage references through the pipeline. Choose retrieval and generation settings based on this task, rather than assuming a generic top-k value is sufficient.
Where the workflow can fail
A relevant title can hide an irrelevant passage, duplicated documents can crowd out better evidence and an outdated source can outrank the current one. The generator may invent a citation when no passage supports the claim. Test empty retrieval, conflicting versions and a question outside the corpus.
A practical evaluation, designed for this use case
Measure whether the correct evidence appears before judging the generated answer. Then check whether every material claim follows from that evidence and whether unsupported questions are handled honestly. Record latency and per-answer cost by stage. A successful retrieval does not prove a correct answer, and a correct-looking answer without support should not pass a groundedness check.

The decision matrix
Original evaluation criteria for this workflow. These are questions to test, not results measured by Roseram.
| Decision | Evidence to collect | Stop or revise when |
|---|---|---|
| Retrieval | Supporting passage identified | Relevant-looking documents lack the answer |
| Grounding | Claims tied to retrieved evidence | The generator invents a citation |
| Diagnosis | Failures separated by stage | Prompt changes conceal a retrieval defect |

Questions this case answers
Can a RAG framework guarantee factual answers?
No. Retrieval, evidence support and generation require their own checks.
Why evaluate retrieval separately?
It distinguishes missing evidence from a generator that misuses available evidence.
