Connect tools with care
Learn what APIs, plugins, and MCP connections can do.
A connection is a bridge
An API is a way for programs to ask each other for data or work. A plugin adds a feature to a tool. MCP is a shared way for an AI app to connect to tools and data. A connection only works if the app supports it and you grant access.
Knowing a tool’s name is not the same as having it installed or connected. Read its setup guide. Check the account, access rights, and actions it can take.
Start with the least access
Give a tool only the access it needs. Reading a file is different from changing it. Making an email draft is different from sending it. Keep a review step before payments, bulk messages, or deleting data.
Test with a sample record. Check where data went. Remove access when you no longer need it. A good setup should tell you when a connection fails rather than quietly dropping work.
Try these steps
- Name the one job the connection must do.
- Review the requested access and limit it.
- Test a sample, check the result, and learn how to disconnect.
A real-world example
For a contact form, test that one consented signup reaches the right list. Do not send a campaign during that test. Check for duplicate records before adding more steps.
Ask AI for help
Copy this prompt into the tool you use. Fill in the blanks. Check what it gives you.
I need to connect ___ to ___ for this job: ___. Explain the setup, least access needed, test steps, and how to remove access. Keep sending actions off.
Your turn
List what your tool can read, change, and send. Mark which actions need your review.
