What should a useful AI trace explain?
A useful trace answers what happened during one request: which source was retrieved, which model was called, whether a tool ran and which step consumed time. A top-level error count cannot establish those relationships. The documented trace model is relevant because AI failures often arise between components rather than inside a single model call.
Use consistent operation names tied to your application’s actual stages. A support assistant might have request validation, retrieval, answer generation and escalation. If a run is slow, you should be able to identify whether it spent time waiting for retrieval, generating tokens or retrying an external tool. This is an instrumentation design for your system, not evidence from a Langfuse deployment we ran.

A focused tracing pilot for a slow AI request
Instrument one harmless workflow first. Create a fixture with a predictable result and intentionally delay one test step. Record duration and status for the stages you expect. Then confirm that the trace lets another developer identify the delayed step without reading the entire application source.
Compare one successful request with one failed request. Check whether the failure is attached to the right operation and whether retries appear as separate attempts or disappear into a single duration. A trace that cannot distinguish the original request from its retries can lead to misleading usage and latency conclusions.
Also test the delivery lifecycle. An application response can succeed while telemetry is lost when a short-lived process exits. The batching documentation discusses flushing in serverless environments; follow the current SDK-specific integration rather than assume background work survives after a function returns.
Pick one workflow
Use harmless fixtures and name its stages.
Create a known delay
Add a controlled test-only pause in one stage.
Inspect the trace
Confirm parent/child relationships and the delayed operation.
Exercise failure and retry
Ensure status and attempt counts remain distinguishable.
Verify export
Check telemetry delivery across the runtime’s shutdown/freeze behavior.

Evaluation datasets need a definition of quality
The evaluation documentation separates production traces from experiments on predefined cases. Use both for different questions. Live traffic reveals actual failure patterns; a stable dataset lets you compare a change against the same inputs. Neither is complete on its own.
For an answer-generating system, define acceptable answers, required evidence and appropriate refusals. Include questions that the source material cannot answer. A model judge can help scale review, but its agreement with human labels and its sensitivity to phrasing need evaluation too. A high aggregate score can hide failures affecting a small but important group of users.
Keep the dataset linked to the behavior you intend to preserve. When a prompt update improves style but weakens factual grounding, the evaluation should expose that trade-off. Do not define quality only as the judge liking the new wording.
| Question | Useful evidence | Avoid this shortcut |
|---|---|---|
| Did retrieval select the right source? | Expected passage or document reference | Judge only the fluency of the answer |
| Did the answer follow evidence? | Grounding review against source material | Treat a confident tone as correctness |
| Did the change cause regressions? | Repeatable dataset comparison | Compare different inputs for each version |
| Does the judge agree with reviewers? | Calibrated labels and disagreement review | Accept every automated score as truth |

Masking and retention before sending traces
Prompt and response content can contain customer records, internal documents and tokens. Decide what you need to diagnose before choosing what to export. A stage name, status, duration and model identifier may answer some operational questions without storing the full user message.
The documented masking behavior has a defined scope. In particular, a hook affecting one exporter does not automatically sanitize a separate observability backend. Map every export path in your own integration and test with recognizable dummy sensitive values. Search the resulting permitted test records to confirm that redaction happened before transmission.
Set a retention period and access policy for trace data. Debugging convenience should not become a permanent archive of every user request by accident. Keep the evidence needed for reproducibility while minimizing unrelated content. This profile does not claim that a particular account or SDK configuration is privacy-audited.

Costs, sampling and realistic operational metrics
Measure usage against completed outcomes and distinct attempts. A request retried three times can generate multiple model calls and tool operations. Summarize them in a way that preserves the distinction between a user request and billable or computational events.
Choose a sampling approach that still captures the failures you need to investigate. Recording nothing except a small success sample may miss rare errors; recording every full payload can create unnecessary ingestion and storage. Start with a clear diagnostic question and verify that the selected fields answer it.
Account for export behavior when reading a dashboard. A telemetry delivery delay or loss can make a healthy system look idle, and a failed instrumented call can make a running model seem broken. Application health and telemetry pipeline health should be observable separately.

When an observability integration is worth keeping
Keep the integration if it helps explain actual failures and supports a repeatable improvement loop. Pick one problem, identify the cause from evidence, implement a change and rerun the relevant evaluation. A useful report states what changed, which cases improved and which limitations remain.
Avoid installing an observability platform merely to add a reassuring status badge. If the instrumentation does not preserve causal relationships or lacks a privacy policy, more events can add cost without improving understanding. The product decision is whether the evidence changes your engineering decisions.
Quick answers
Common questions about Langfuse
Is tracing the same as evaluating quality?
No. Tracing explains the operations of a request; evaluation compares behavior with a defined quality criterion. They complement each other.
Can I log full customer prompts?
Decide that through your data-handling requirements, not convenience. Minimize and redact before export, restrict access and establish retention.
Why are serverless traces missing?
A short-lived runtime can exit or freeze before queued telemetry is sent. Follow the current integration’s documented flushing lifecycle and verify delivery.
Does a high automated evaluation score prove correctness?
No. Check the criteria, dataset coverage and agreement with human review, especially for important failure modes.
Follow the evidence
