Opening excerpt

The import that worked on one machine

Ivo inherited the inventory application with a message: “The import is nearly fixed.”

The message was accompanied by a screenshot of three successful rows. In the warehouse, the same import rejected a file from the supplier. Ivo compared the examples. The screenshot used a comma between fields. The supplier used a semicolon. One product code began with two zeroes that the spreadsheet had helpfully removed.

This is a fictional maintenance problem. We will use it to study an editor-assisted workflow in which investigation and verification matter as much as implementation. It is not a reported Cursor incident or a benchmark result.

Cursor's documentation describes Agent as an assistant that can work on coding tasks in the development environment. That capability creates an opportunity to inspect and change a project, but the developer still needs to define what would count as a successful result.

Ivo resists the first tempting request: “Fix the import.” He collects two synthetic files instead. One represents the accepted format. Another represents the supplier's relevant differences without containing commercial records. He records what the application currently does with each.

The difference is now an artifact. The assistant can inspect it. A test can preserve it. A reviewer can challenge it. “Nearly fixed” has become a question with observable answers.
