CUSTOMER ACCOUNT / ATTRIBUTED EVIDENCE
What this case establishes
This is a commercial publisher’s customer account. Roseram checked the source and wrote the analysis; it did not interview the customer, run the product, audit the figures or establish that AI caused the reported business result. The pilot below is a proposal, not a completed experiment.

JetBrains: the documented workflow
Anthropic describes JetBrains using Claude through Amazon Bedrock in developer tools, including Junie. The account reports internal improvements in documentation similarity and syntactically correct refactoring. Those are specific benchmark measures, not a claim that every refactor preserves runtime behavior or that another IDE will produce the same result.
The mechanism worth examining
An IDE can supply symbols, project structure and familiar review surfaces around a generated edit. That lowers the cost of seeing where a refactor belongs. Yet a parseable change is only the first gate: callers, serialization, side effects and public interfaces may still change. Treat structural tooling as a way to make verification easier, rather than as a substitute for a behavioral contract.
The implementation decision
Choose a refactor with stable inputs and outputs before asking the assistant to reorganize it. Record which public names and errors must remain unchanged. A benchmark focused on syntax is relevant to whether code can be parsed; it should not be used to predict a reduction in customer defects. Compare the agent’s diff with the IDE’s ordinary deterministic refactoring tools where they can perform the same operation.
Where the workflow can fail
A rename that compiles can break dynamic property access, external integrations or persisted values. Generated documentation can resemble a reference while omitting an exception that matters to a caller. Inspect those boundaries explicitly. If the task changes behavior intentionally, label it as a feature change rather than counting it as a successful behavior-preserving refactor.
A practical evaluation, designed for this use case
Use a representative component with a golden input/output fixture, an invalid-input case and a downstream caller. Run the ordinary tests before and after the refactor, then inspect the public contract manually. Record parsing success separately from behavioral success and reviewer correction time. This provides an evidence trail that is stronger than a single aggregate benchmark position.

The decision matrix
Original evaluation criteria for this workflow. These are questions to test, not results measured by Roseram.
| Decision | Evidence to collect | Stop or revise when |
|---|---|---|
| Syntax | Parser and compiler result | Parse success is called correctness |
| Behavior | Golden and failure cases | Public output or error changes unexpectedly |
| Documentation | Exceptions match source | Similarity scores hide omitted constraints |
YOUR EVALUATION / NOT A REPORTED RESULT
A small pilot you can inspect
Use these steps as a planning checklist. Checking a box records your progress in this view; it does not run or validate an experiment.
Questions this case answers
Does syntactically correct mean behavior-preserving?
No. Compilation can coexist with changed outputs, side effects or compatibility.
Why compare deterministic IDE tools?
A simple structural transformation may already be handled reliably without model inference.

Wiki brief
JetBrains is examined here for ide-assisted refactoring validation. The article answers “How should developers verify an AI refactor inside an IDE?” using linked primary material and original evaluation design. It is not a customer testimonial for Roseram or an endorsement by JetBrains.
Operator takeaways
- Separate syntax and behavior.
- Use independent regression fixtures.
- Choose the simplest adequate tool.
